And this too shall pass..

Christmas 2014 is but a distant memory..

The tree is down..the lights are removed from the sundeck railing..decorations are stowed away, in the one bin that I have allotted for Christmas’s in the future..

Christmas day was a quiet once again..just the three of us..IMG_4032

The usual menu..

Eggs Benedict

and of course Turkey Dinner

Presents were opened..it was a minimal haul..the process of downsizing has effected my desire to purchase mountains of gifts…just couldn’t see the point in buying more stuff?

..a few gift cards and some small items rounded out the gift giving for 2014.

So now as 2015 is fast approaching..we both have some emails to send to our respective boss’s..mine are well aware of my retirement plans but Doug’s boss is in for a bit of surprise once he breaks the news.

Once this done..the pension papers will be mailed off and we will only have about 6 weeks till we move the trailer out of it’s  ‘storage space’..and into it’s February/ March home..

We still have some more items to rid ourselves of but the process is going quickly.

We have one last  pile for the local Value Village..

One pile for temporary storage in Keremeos..only till spring and then we will load some of it in the back of the truck to take to our spring/summer destination.

..and then there is the pile for the trailer..

That little mountain seems to be expanding..I keep telling myself..’just bring the essentials’….trying hard to think like a ‘minimalist’..

It works most days and we know the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is much brighter than it was at the beginning of 2014.

I just know that in 45 days work will be done and then?..only time will tell..

This phase will pass and we will move on to the next one..

No one said it would be easy..and it won’t be perfect..

There  are no guarantee’s in life..

It has been a long road to get here..and we know that there will be some bumps along the way..but that’s okay.. we will be together..a team of ‘two’..

There is strength in numbers and we will lean on each other to deal with those ‘bumps’.

Happy New Year to all our readers..may next year be filled with good health and safely travelled miles.

Counting down?

It has been two months and one day since I last did a blog post..yes, we are still here..very much alive…just been counting down..

The only pictures I have taken it seems are of items we are trying to sell..

and the  only words  I have written as of late are ads for Craig’s List..

We have both come to the realization that it’s  just ‘stuff’..boxes and boxes of stuff..

from sheets and towels, to dishes and crystal..

oh sure we have saved a few items that are now stored at Doug’s brother’s ..and we are bringing some small items with us but the rest will meet their demise either by being sold or given away..

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure?

It is ‘freeing’ to rid oneself of all the stuff..

I just look at all the things we have accumulated over the past 30 plus years of marriage and it’s constricting that we are so consumed by our ‘stuff’..

There have been days where I look around and have ‘morbid’ thoughts..’what if we were to die tomorrow?..what would our daughter do with all this stuff?’

and it is these thoughts that have gotten me through some of those ‘boxes’..

We have managed to sell quite a few items..and we are  now down to the last few things..

We have made a few trips to our local Value Village…

We had one ‘garage/condo sale..that was very disheartening..one big $20 sale..

This whole process of purging has been a learning curve..

We have hit a few bumps in the road but our items to be sold are dwindling..

There are those ‘craig listers’

  • who pretend to be interested in the ‘stuff’..say they are going to show..and nope..
  • or there is the ones who offer a pathetic monetary amount..
  • or the one’s who want us to deliver?

only a few more things to go that are worth selling..and then we will be done with this part of the process..

Now don’t get me wrong ..we are very grateful for those that did purchase from us..we met some interesting people..

Everyone has a story to tell..

  • there was the blue suitcase that was going to be used for a trip to Ethiopia

  • the pencil drawings that a couple from England bought

  • the freezer that was going to be a prop on a TV show

  • the bar fridge for a daughter’s study area

  • the fishing waders for a new steelhead fisherman

  • the fly-tying box that we sold in Princeton,  to a guy who just had shoulder surgery

  • the man who bought the shelving units because his room mate was using his pots and pans and eating his food..now he was going to set up a ‘storeroom’ so he could lock his stuff up..

..like I said it has been an interesting process..others have done it and we will too..one day at a time..

So now as Christmas is almost upon us..it would be time to focus on that..at least for a few days…

..our Christmas decorations are minimal..

..but these few items have made the ‘cut’..some things I just can’t part with..

Thanks for hanging in there with us..we know that one day this ‘will all be worth it’

A long way to go and a short time to get there?

Its been a while since I last posted..we have been a tad busy..

I know I have written before about the task of ‘purging’..

Organizing, selling, donating and disposing of unwanted and unneeded items..

We have gone through this a few times over the past six years but finally we are actually committed to accomplishing the ‘monster task’..

Why you ask?..well our ‘work camping jobs’ for next spring have been confirmed..

The lease on the condo we are renting is done February 28, 2015..

We now have a goal..

But where does one begin with this daunting task?…

for us it began with our daughter moving out..

The storage locker was emptied and all stuff that occupied that space was brought home..

sorted into semi-organized piles of  ‘sell , donate, dispose’

We have sold a few items  on Craig’s List already..

there is also all the ‘stuff in the trailer’....

my goodness the ‘mess keeps getting bigger and bigger’ and just a tad overwhelming..

But we figured we needed to  ‘move out’  before we could ‘move in’ in preparation for our ‘new life’..

I don’t really know if this was the ‘right thing to do’ but since we are basically trying to combine ‘two houses into one’ better to have all the ‘stuff together’..

..and then there is the time frame of moving out of the condo and into the trailer..

So we made the decision to bring our beloved ‘Freeway’ down to the coast and store him here for the winter so he will be accessible to us mid-February..

This should make the ‘transition’ at least a wee bit easier..

We made the trek to Keremeos this weekend..we had some work to do..IMG_3946

Bin after bin was loaded up..

and on Sunday morning we were hooked up and ready to roll..

..as we say so long to our ‘home base’..

..next time we park here ..our lives will be completely different..

as we headed west through the Hope-Princeton..the truck handled the mountain passes..’piece of cake’

Top of Sunday Summit..

..within a few hours we were ‘parked’ at our new storage facility..Freeway has a new ‘friend’ to keep him company for the winter..’ACE’ says ‘welcome to the compound’…’You will be safe here!’

..a quick stop for lunch and we were home..now the real work begins..

..the ‘purge is on’…and we have  long way to go and a short time to get there!!

Better get busy!!

Can you go ‘home again?’

The final trip to Monck Park for the year was done this past weekend..

We had one last ‘thing’ we had to do..that was bring our ‘white box’ , home again..

We arrived just after 7 pm on Friday night..

We had an impromptu get together with our fellow PFO’s..wine and snacks and lots of laughs..

We were a tad noisy and if we had been regular campers we would have been in ‘big trouble’…

Bright and early on Saturday morning we were hooked up and ready to roll..

It was time to vacate our ‘home spot’..we have been here long enough..

the sun was just coming up..

..the gatehouse was ‘quiet’..

..we took it slow along the route  out of the park..there are many bumps and cattle-guards along the way..no need to rattle anything loose in the trailer..

..up Hamilton Hill..heading towards the town of Princeton..

and before long we stopped at the rest area along 5A..

..we stopped in Princeton for a quick breakfast and within an hour or so we were pulling into our ‘home base’..Keremeos..

I guess you can go ‘home again?’..

..unhooked and settled in within an hour or so..

Next task on the agenda was to get the Satellite dish hooked up..

It took a bit of adjusting but finally we got a signal..

Doug was beginning to wonder if he would ever hit that ‘darn thing’!

..our view is the same..

just a few grapes on the vine..

and a some horses…

..our afternoon was spent doing a few chores, groceries, dinner ..just another day in Keremeos..

Sunday morning was the usual breakfast..

french toast and sausages..

and before long we were packed up and heading towards our ‘real home’..

Our route this weekend was a mere 776 kilometers..seemed more like 900 miles..

..are we glad to be ‘home?’..not really but the reality is we have responsibilities..at least for now..
